Cargo Security Is a Layered Discipline

No single lock, tracker, camera or verification step can eliminate cargo theft. Effective prevention combines physical security, operational discipline, identity verification, technology, employee awareness and intelligence sharing.

Know the Value and Risk of the Load

Security should reflect the actual exposure. High-value, easily resold or strategically targeted commodities may require stronger controls than routine freight, including tighter release procedures, enhanced tracking and documented escalation protocols.

Protect the Handoff

Pickup and delivery are critical control points. Organizations should define who may authorize changes, how identities are verified, how exceptions are approved and how unexpected changes are independently confirmed.

Use Technology as Part of a System

GPS tracking, RFID, electronic seals, license-plate recognition, video systems and other technologies can improve visibility. Their greatest value comes when alerts are monitored, escalation responsibilities are clear and data can be shared quickly with the right partners.

Build Relationships Before the Incident

The worst time to begin searching for law-enforcement, carrier, railroad, retailer and intelligence contacts is after a high-value shipment disappears. Trusted public-private relationships should be established before an emergency.
